About
The Cottage
Built around 1862, Tiptree Cottage is one of Canterbury’s oldest and most intact cob cottages. Recognised as a Category I heritage building by Heritage New Zealand, it stands as a rare example of pioneering architecture and a living link to colonial New Zealand.

Constructed from cob—a mixture of clay, water, and straw—the two-storey cottage with its timber attic reflects both the practical challenges of early settlement and the English heritage of its builders.
